Welcome to IRISWEB

The Z39.50 information retrieval protocol

Z39.50 is an open standard which defines a protocol for computer to computer information retrieval. It allows a researcher to use a single query form to search and retrieve records from external databases that are configured to use the protocol. This retrieval, and data transfer, can occur irrespective of the software/hardware platform on which that database is operating, or whether the database being queried uses a web, windows or character-based interface.

The IRIS consortium uses the protocol to provide access to a number of key Irish university and research library catalogues, and to important international bibliographic collections. The client-side system uses the SEREN Z39.50 software, produced by the Welsh Consortium of Higher Education Institutions.

The software also functions as a resource discovery tool, with item ordering and document supply facilities, for IRIS member interlibrary loan departments. It is hoped to extend this service to other designated users within the near future.

For more information about Z39.50 generally, and the technical aspects of implementing the protocol within the IRIS libraries, please see the TECH INFO page on this website.
