Aims and Objectives of IRIS

The IRIS consortium aims to:

• Set up a virtual distributed web catalogue of academic and research libraries, using Z39.50 as the underlying protocol, and extend this catalogue to students, staff, and the wider academic and business community. Technical development will focus on increasing the accuracy and quality of the information retrieval function within the software used to run the virtual catalogue.
  
• Provide access to document delivery services for participating libraries.
  
• Provide an information forum for the implementation of the Z39.50 standard within consortium libraries, and to develop an IRIS distributed searching profile in accordance with developing international profiles.
  
• Develop strategic alliances with similar consortia within the international community to exchange technical information, and to contribute to the development of the standard at an international level.
